Context and justification

Pests mites

  • Vegetable crops are attacked by mites pests belonging to the family of Tetranychidae
  • These pests have a negative impact on crop yields, as they are responsible for at least 40% of agricultural losses

Solutions to control the damage caused to vegetable crops by pest (insects and mites) infestations

Chimical solution :

Pesticides
Environmental pollution and damage to human health

Biological solution :

Natural auxiliary: An organism that occurs naturally in the environment and is capable of eliminating a pest that causes damage to crops.

Predatory mites

  • Geographical distribution: Worldwide
  • Biodiversity 2476 valid species
  • Agronomic signifiance: Biological control of pest organisms (mites and insects) infestations
  • Interest for population: Reduce using of pesticides

The success of biological control programs greatly depends on the reliability of the specific taxonomic
expertise involved in the program. Each species has its own bio-ecological characteristics, including
predator–prey relationships, which determine their effectiveness in biological control programs

In Central Africa

55 species belong to the predatory family of Phytoseiidae have been notified

In Republic of Congo

1994: First study on predatory mites in RC was carried out by Gutierrez and Bonato

2018: Second study on predatory mites in RC was carried out by Belle Mbou Okassa and Mbama Ntabi

In this context, two papers were published on the biodiversity of predatory mites.

The findings of these studies fill some existing gaps in our knowledge in terms of the biodiversity of predatory mites in the RC:

  • The number of known mites in the RC is now 10, this number is lower than that in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, where 36 species have been reported,
  • A new species for science in the genus Euseius has been observed.
