Results and perspectives

Main expected results

1. Build of Database “MiteBiodivCongo”

This database will be based on « the Barcode of life ». The Barcode of Life is a project to create a public collection of reference sequences from vouchered specimens of all species of life

2. Rearing of predatory mites in climatic enclosures

The mites will be reared in conditions of optimal temperature, hydrometry and food preference in order to obtain a sufficient number of generations to carry out field releases and reduce the intensity of pests.

3. Test on plant species

Specific plant species to be planted around crops to help maintain predatory mites. There is very
little literature on this subject in the Republic of Congo and experiments will have to be carried out.

Perspectives

Knowledge transfer to farmers

  • Propose plant species that will help maintain crop auxiliaries around the plots
  • Training in biological control (with technique of releasing predatory mites) and biomonitoring

=> Natural crop protection (Biological control) and higher yields with fewer farm losses

Knowledge transfer to students

  • Training in techniques for reliably identifying crop protection agents (combination of several approaches)
